More evidence continues to emerge on the benefits of the arts in the classroom. Most would attest, the arts are necessary. The inclusion of arts in the ESSA, Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015, shows that policymakers, not only arts advocacy groups and educators, view the arts as an essential component to a well-rounded education.
In this decade, school districts across the nation are recommitting. Private sectors in turn seeing the benefit of the arts, and investing capital in its future. When students do not have access to arts education, to disciplines such as dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts, there are negative implications; students lack critical thinking, problem solving skills, and the ability to create with intention and empathy, to name a few. Empirical evidence presented in the Journal for Civil Society shows that: arts participation is strongly related to behaviors that contribute to the health of civil society, such as increased civic engagement, greater social tolerance, and reductions in other-regarding behavior.
Watching the first Democratic debate impresses this strong role of the arts on education. Without continued evidence-based arts programs, future leaders will lack characteristics driven by the arts; teachers will lack the tools to effectively meet the whole student. We do not have to imagine this. Years without the arts in the classroom has taught us many valuable lessons. One lesson revealing our civic duty to arts education. As research shows, the arts increase teacher and student community involvement and their tolerance of opposing views.
Pulse Arts sees the necessity of the arts, keenly. This year as Pulse Arts proudly celebrates its first year in operation, we note our civic duty to give arts education its grandstand. Our accomplishments in Sonoma County this year have been varied and impactful, some of which include: the facilitation of all Visual and Performing Arts in the Windsor Unified School District to coordinate a two-week arts integration summer program for grades TK-5;
Vertical Articulation and Scope and Sequence project with all arts disciplines based on the 2019 California VAPA standards;
Successful implementation of several grant-funded collaborations with Sonoma County Dancers United bringing 10 weeks of dance education to over 500 elementary students county-wide;
Establishment of new partnerships with Luther Burbank Center for the Arts and Sonoma State University dance department to support the teaching of the artists training program.
Collaboration with Creative Sonoma and CAAE to develop a strategic plan for arts education in Sonoma county;
And, Big Idea Arts and Education Consulting for coordination and implementation of a three day arts integration summit and development of a $20,000 arts integration scholarship program for teachers.

We are excited to announce our first official partnership with Windsor Unified School District! Pulse Arts was hired by Windsor Unified School District to oversee existing grant implementation, professional learning, and program facilitation for the 2018/2019 school year. We are extremely appreciative of the trust the district has put in our new organization. In partnership with teacher leaders and supportive administrators, we will collaboratively build opportunities for Sonoma County youth. We hope to make Windsor Unified a model Visual and Performing Arts district for the county.
We believe in a collective leadership model. We want to engage and empower teachers and honor their professionalism and expertise. We don't believe that arts integration should be an "additional responsibility" put on already overworked educators. We commit ourselves to building on teachers' strengths and listening to the concerns and challenges of each classroom. We hope to support program implementation that responds to the individual needs of each classroom and provide quality professional learning opportunities that help build self-efficacy.
As VAPA facilitators during the 2018/2019 school year, we will be coordinating and piloting a teaching artist dance residency. We will work to develop program goals for the district's strategic VAPA plan, identify (and attempt to secure) additional funding sources and partnerships, and work with teacher leaders to support integration of the arts in response to the needs and strengths of each campus. We aim to maximize VAPA branding for WUSD and will be working with the Windsor Arts Now community to plan exhibition opportunities including the planning and implementation of a student arts showcase on May 23 and 24. Additionally, Pulse Arts will plan and host a series of professional development events, and support teacher leaders to serve as professional coaches, mentors and site liaisons.

Pulse Arts is creating a curricular framework for Bay Area arts organizations and secondary arts educators to serve as a guidebook for intergenerational and multicultural student leadership through the development and realization of public visual and performing arts projects within their communities. This will influence the future faces and leadership styles of the arts by helping build a workforce that understands the value of social conscience, cultural influence, and creative impact.
The curriculum will focus on leadership, social justice and activism through the arts. Students will develop projects around significant issues in their communities and organize public events showcasing their efforts through an exhibition or performance. Through the organization of these events, students will be mentored by industry professionals and taught about careers and leadership in the following 4 focus areas:
Students learn about professional art making through collaborating, creating and showing original works in a public setting. Mentors are professional creatives including artists, directors, choreographers, musicians, designers, painters, dancers, etc.
Students learn about management and marketing through publicizing and coordinating a public exhibition and/or performance. Mentors are professional creatives, business owners, staff, officers and board members of arts organizations, etc.
Students learn about planning, teaching, and mentoring through working with younger youth and engaging them in the process of collaborative creation. Mentors are teachers, teaching artists, coaches, etc.
Arts Production and Installation
Students learn about technical and/or managerial operations involved when producing and managing live events. Mentors are electricians, set builders, lighting designers, sound engineers, professional promoters, curators, etc.
Arts organizations can use the curriculum to build and/or enhance educational programs which include after school programs, school artist-in residence programs, mentorship/internship programs, and workshops.
Visual and Performing Arts teachers, and Career Technical Education teachers in the Arts Media and Entertainment industry sector can use the curriculum to enhance and build programs around viable careers in the arts. The guide will also support work around student leadership in arts fields, which is one of the 11 elements of a high quality career technical education program.

Pulse Arts has been granted our first award of $5000 to bring the community of Sonoma County together around the theme Why Arts Matter. We will be hosting 3 public events in collaboration with the Windsor Arts Now Community, The Movement Lab, The Nueva School for the Arts, and Bow and Arrow Clothing. All events will be hosted by The Heartcore MC, Radioactive.
The events will be documented by a professional videographer and published online. Hopefully it will be shown at local school board and/or community meetings. Community members of all ages will be invited to actively demonstrate WHY ARTS MATTER through participation in these events and through interviews with the facilitators.
1. I AM VIBRANT will involve a collaborative mural painting project at the Windsor Town Green in collaboration with local visual and performing hip hop artist Wood Rowe Farguheson Jr. aka MC Radio Active (The Heartcore Emcee) . The mural will be designed by Wood Rowe Farguheson on large plywood sheets and painted by participating community members.
2. I AM ABLE will involve a positive kid-friendly Hip Hop gathering in collaboration with MC Radio Active (The Heartcore Emcee) , and The Movement Lab Dance Studio. Extraordinary, an all-abilities dance company will perform along with local artists of all ages. 2 hour event
3. I AM BEAUTIFUL, a free professional photo shoot for community members at the Plaza Park in Cotati in collaboration with Mercedes Hernandez at Bow and Arrow Clothing. 2 hour event
WHY ARTS MATTER will serve to activate the public space and community in which it will occur by bringing together individuals of all backgrounds and abilities to engage in positive creative activities around the theme of empowerment through the arts, and be a part of a short film documenting the process. Community members will be asked WHY ARTS MATTER and how it the arts have impacted their lives. In addition, the film will be used to promote and support the establishment of arts programs in public schools.
Participants will be reached through a robust social media campaign announcing each event 4 weeks in advance. Additionally, fliers and posters will be printed and distributed at local businesses, schools (with permission), and creative agencies.

2. Host a series of free and positive community events in public spaces that bring people together around a common creative theme: Why Arts Matter
3. Create a film that can demonstrate and illustrate the importance of the arts and arts education and can be used as an advocacy tool in the community.

The new state budget — the last one signed by Governor Jerry Brown — has over $50 million more for funding arts and arts education including $44 million in one-time funding for Arts Education.
"I think it's a very very clear message from the governor's office that the arts make a difference, that the arts can help communities meet challenges and develop solutions to some of the really tough problems we have going on — climate change, mass incarceration, health care needs, school bullying, racial profiling," Bown-Crawford said.
Landon said he thinks the allocation shows "the legislature intends to live up to the commitment of our state education code" and marks "a moment of in our journey of bringing arts back to the core of education."

We formally invite you to join us on September 22, 2018 at 5:00pm for an evening of food, drinks and performance at Juncture Tap Room. We are excited to announce the expansion of Sonoma County Dancers United and the launch of Pulse Arts, a new organization dedicated to building programs and sustainable relationships between schools, arts organizations, and creative industry. Sonoma County Dancers United and Pulse Arts will be collaborating to build artist residency programs in select Sonoma County schools in the 2018-2019 school year. All proceeds will go directly to SCDU and Pulse Arts.
